I went on a field trip with one of my daughter’s this morning.
I just made it to the school with 5 minutes to spare before the buses rolled out and headed for the concert hall. I ran into the front office to sign in and collect my “VOLUNTEER” sticker. The receptionist was sitting at the desk right in front of the sign-in board. She’s new to the school this year and I’ve only spoken to her a few times, but today, amidst my crazed rush, she stopped her work to greet me. Her gentle calm words and the warmth in her beautiful smile slowed me down in my tracks.
She said, “Oh I remember going on field trips with my kids when they were young. It’s so wonderful that you are able to do it. I am sure they appreciate it. Have a fabulous time.”
This meaningful, brief encounter reminded me that it’s the simple things in life that lift our days. Like a smile, a moment of understanding and connection…a warm reception that has the power to slow us down and bring us back to earth…to what matters.
It is in these profoundly ordinary experiences that amazing people touch our souls and change our lives.
As for the receptionist at my children’s’ school…I believe she’s amazing!
Never stop believing one person can make a difference…that one person is YOU!
